DCWC Projects in Nepal

DCWC Nepal is committed to improving Health and educational facilities in the many poor rural areas of Nepal. As at summer of 2009, with funds raised here in the UK, we have built eleven schools and are part way through phase one of our hospital build, which should be completed later in the year. The DCWC has also built four further schools with the kind assistance from donors from Switzerland, Czech Republic, USA and Scotland.

Health Projects

The DCWC is very much committed to improving the health facilities in rural Nepal. In August of 2007 we took a health camp to the remote area of Kavre and with the help of volunteer Doctors nurses and dental surgeons we treated over 2000 patients who would otherwise not have received vital medical assistance. In 2008 we will start to construct our very own medical centre, which we hope to continue to add to over the foreseeable future as further funding presents itself. The medical centre will enable us to help combat Tuberculosis, the greatest killer in Nepal, and to offer basic medical amenities we so easily take for granted here in the west.

School Buildings

Our school buildings are simple 4 to 6 room affairs, which cost us in the region of around £4000. They generally take around 4 to 6 months to build depending on accessibility of materials etc. As part of their commitment to the building of the school the local VDC's (Village development committees) contribute the labour, which keeps our costs down and ensures they look after and appreciate a building built by themselves. At each school we furnish the building with tables and seating along with blackboards and all essential items necessary to undertake classes for teaching. At each school opening ceremony we also distribute school stationary in the shape of writing books, pencils, sharpeners, rubbers etc. We also do a clothes distribution for all the children, and adults where possible, in the village. Clothes Distributions

The DCWC has distributed many hundreds of Kilo’s of clothes to many villages throughout the Kathmandu valley. Clothes donated by the kind people of UK, Switzerland, USA and Canada have helped to provide many poor village people with much needed clothing. From the UK alone we manage to get around 200 Kg to Nepal every year. The clothes are taken to the villages quite often on foot for a lot of the way due to poor roads. Once in the village just one item of clothing is given to each child and adult (especially elderly) where possible. We are of course greeted with the most warm and kindest of welcomes in every village we visit.

Adult education classes

The adult education classes are aimed predominantly at adult women. So many of the women in the villages are unable to read and write. The adult education classes give them a very basic six-month course that teaches them to be able to write and be able to understand basic Nepali language. It can be difficult to get the women to attend and complete the courses due to the pressures put upon them by the men in the village. Many have very traditional values and believe the woman should be there in the home at all times providing for him and the family. At the end of the six-month course if successful the women receive a certificate to acknowledge their achievement. This can also help the women to find work proving to a potential employer they are able read and write if only at a basic level.
