Health Projects

The DCWC is very much committed to improving the health facilities in rural Nepal. In August of 2007 we took a health camp to the remote area of Kavre and with the help of volunteer Doctors nurses and dental surgeons we treated over 2000 patients who would otherwise not have received vital medical assistance. In 2008 we will start to construct our very own medical centre, which we hope to continue to add to over the foreseeable future as further funding presents itself. The medical centre will enable us to help combat Tuberculosis, the greatest killer in Nepal, and to offer basic medical amenities we so easily take for granted here in the west.

School Building

The building of educational establishments is essential for the future prosperity of Nepal. So many villages are still without a school and struggle to provide facilities to give the children of the village an education. A big part of the role played by the DCWC is to provide as many villages as possible with school buildings. It costs very little to create a school building giving educational facilities for 150 children. We have created and are in the process of completing several school building projects and are in need of funding to complete many more that are so desperately needed.

Clothes Distribution

The DCWC has distributed many hundreds of Kilo’s of clothes to many villages throughout the Kathmandu valley. Clothes donated by the kind people of UK, Switzerland, USA and Canada have helped to provide many poor village people with much needed clothing. From the UK alone we manage to get around 200 Kg to Nepal every year. The clothes are taken to the villages quite often on foot for a lot of the way due to poor roads. Once in the village just one item of clothing is given to each child and adult (especially elderly) where possible. We are of course greeted with the most warm and kindest of welcomes in every village we visit.

Adult education classes

The adult education classes are aimed predominantly at adult women. So many of the women in the villages are unable to read and write. The adult education classes give them a very basic six-month course that teaches them to be able to write and be able to understand basic Nepali language. It can be difficult to get the women to attend and complete the courses due to the pressures put upon them by the men in the village. Many have very traditional values and believe the woman should be there in the home at all times providing for him and the family. At the end of the six-month course if successful the women receive a certificate to acknowledge their achievement. This can also help the women to find work proving to a potential employer they are able read and write if only at a basic level.

Other activities undertaken by the DCWC

The DCWC are always ready to act upon any immediate emergencies that affect the people in the villages. In times of severe cold deaths especially amongst the elderly are commonplace. The DCWC will provide blankets to help to keep them warm. The DCWC has acted in times of flood setting up temporary facilities in the affected villages and providing aid and relief to the families involved.
